By default, your service uses the latest available rTorrent version. If needed, you can switch to any other version installed on the server.
This can be useful if you require compatibility with a specific ruTorrent plugin, third-party tool or an older configuration that does not work correctly with the latest release.
Step 1 – List Available Versions
Log in to your service via SSH and run the following command:
ls -ld /opt/rtorrent*
The version number is the part after the dash (-).
For example, if you see:
rtorrent-0.9.6
the installed version is 0.9.6.
Step 2 – Select the Version
To use a different version, create the file ~/.config/.rtversion containing the desired version number.
For example, to use rTorrent 0.9.4:
echo "0.9.4" > ~/.config/.rtversion
Replace 0.9.4 with any other installed version that you would like to use.
Step 3 – Restart rTorrent
After creating or modifying the .rtversion file, restart your rTorrent instance for the selected version to become active.
Reverting to the Latest Version
If you want to use the latest available rTorrent version again, simply remove the version file:
rm -f ~/.config/.rtversion
Then restart rTorrent.
Notes
- The latest available rTorrent version is used by default.
- The selected version must already be installed on the server.
- Any change to the .rtversion file requires an rTorrent restart before it takes effect.
- Removing the .rtversion file restores the default behaviour and starts the latest available version after the next restart.
