How to Use Recovery Mode for a VPS

This guide explains how to boot your VPS server from a recovery image using the Recovery tab in the Client Area.

Recovery Mode is useful when you need to repair the system, recover data, troubleshoot boot problems or use a recovery environment when the installed operating system is not working correctly.

⚠ Important

To attach a recovery image, the VPS must be stopped first. If the VPS is running, the recovery image option cannot be used.

Open the Recovery Tab

To start Recovery Mode:

  • Log in to the Client Area.
  • Go to My Services.
  • Open your VPS service.
  • Go to the Recovery tab.

Stop the VPS

Before attaching a recovery image, stop the VPS from the main VPS page in the Client Area.

Wait until the VPS status changes to:

STOPPED

When the VPS is fully stopped, continue with the next step.

Attach a Recovery Image

After the VPS is stopped, go back to the Recovery tab and click:

ATTACH RECOVERY IMAGE

A window with available recovery images will be displayed.

Available recovery image options include:

  • GRML
  • Acronis Boot Media
  • Veeam Recovery

Select the recovery image you want to boot and click:

CONFIRM

The selected recovery image will be attached to your VPS.

Start the VPS

After the recovery image is attached, go back to the main VPS page and click:

START SERVER

The VPS will boot from the selected recovery image.

This usually takes a few minutes.

Access the Recovery Environment

After the VPS boots from the recovery image, open Console Access from the main VPS page.

The recovery environment is accessed through the VPS console, not through normal SSH login.

You can find the Console Access guide here:

How to Use Console Access for a VPS

ℹ Console Access Required

After booting from a recovery image, use Console Access to work with the VPS in the selected recovery environment.

When to Use Recovery Mode

Recovery Mode can be useful for:

  • repairing a broken operating system,
  • recovering files from the VPS disk,
  • checking or repairing filesystems,
  • fixing bootloader problems,
  • restoring data from a backup tool,
  • using Acronis or Veeam recovery media.

Boot Back to the Normal System

After you finish working in Recovery Mode, go back to the Recovery tab in the Client Area.

Click:

DETACH RECOVERY IMAGE

Confirm that you want to detach the currently mounted recovery image.

After the recovery image is detached, go back to the main VPS page and stop the VPS.

Wait until the VPS status changes to:

STOPPED

When the VPS is fully stopped, click:

START SERVER

The VPS will then boot back into the normal installed operating system.

⚠ Important

If the recovery image is still attached, the VPS may continue booting into Recovery Mode. Detach the recovery image first, then stop the VPS and start it again to boot back into the normal system.

Verification

✔ Recovery Mode Started

If Console Access shows the selected recovery environment after starting the VPS, Recovery Mode has been started successfully.

✔ Normal Boot Restored

If the recovery image is detached and the VPS boots back into the installed operating system after stopping and starting it again, the VPS has returned to normal boot mode.
